Milan's superstar remains grounded

by Andrew Downie of ESPNSoccernet.com

SAO PAULO, Brazil - He is arguably the best football player in the world, his brother plays in the Serie B and is as religious as he is, his father is still friends with his son's old teammates and his mother makes exceedingly good cakes.

Those are just some of the things that help explain the phenomenon that is Kaka.

I watched Kaka come through the ranks at Sao Paulo. I watched him establish himself with Milan and Brazil. And I've watched him grow, both physically and mentally, to become one of the best in the world today.

During that time I've spoken to his friends, his family, his teammates and his coaches and no one has a bad word to say about the Milan midfielder.

Sometimes people don't want to criticise other players because they are afraid to stick their necks out or because they don't want to sound nasty. But the people who speak about Kaka do so with a real earnestness. Everyone seems to think the world of him.

That includes the youngsters who were with him when they came through the ranks at Sao Paulo. Kaka was different from most of the youngsters trying to make it into Sao Paulo's professional ranks. Many, if not most, were poor, dark skinned, came from broken families and lived far from the club's training ground in the impoverished suburbs of South America's biggest city.

Kaka was white, well off, had a stable family life and lived in the same Morumbi district where the club has its home. And as such he and his family were adopted as surrogates for many of Kaka's less fortunate teammates.

'Their family helped people who didn't have the money or time to go home,' Juan Maldonado Jaimes, one of Kaka's former colleagues, told me a while back. 'They took them to their house, to help them pass time. We'd play video games, play football, eat. Some players went there even when Kaka wasn't there. It was quite a close relationship between the players and the family. They are lovely people. His mother would make sweets or bake cakes.'

That stable family life is evident in the comportment of Kaka's father and brother Digao, who plays for Rimini in Italy's Serie B. They both look like Kaka, especially Digao, who is tall, pale and has the same toothy smile. (Digao is currently training at Sao Paulo while recovering from a ligament injury.)

Most noticeably, however, they are both impeccably mannered. As the saying in Brazil goes, the son of a fish is a fish. It means like father like son and Kaka is indeed like his father.

Engineer Bosco Izecson brought up his son to be a good Christian who values honesty and hard work. Although much attention is paid to the fact that Kaka is one of Brazil's few middle class footballers - and Kaka freely admits he does not fit the established stereotype - his father played down the wealth disparities and said he has tried to instill universal values in his son.

'What is important is their honesty and their character,' he said in discussing his outlook on life. 'Everyone wants to get on and better themselves. We lived our lives that way and Kaka has too. People helped us and we try and help people.'

That is not to say that Kaka has not had his problems to overcome. He suffered from a bone deficiency as a child that made him small for his age. He was two years behind his peers in terms of development and it was only his skill on the ball and his quick thinking that enabled him to play competitively with boys his own age.

'I saw him play as a kid and he was so small and thin but I could tell he had talent so I picked him out to play,' his former coach Milton Cruz told me. 'But he wasn't strong enough at first, the ball was bigger than his legs! One time he wanted to take a penalty and I wondered if he would have the strength to kick it all the way to the goal! He caught my attention, though, and he has shot up since then.'

Once he did cement his place in the Sao Paulo junior side he suffered another potentially crippling setback that helped shape who he is today. At age 18, Kaka jumped into a swimming pool while on holiday and fractured his spine. He didn't know how bad the damage was at the time. A local doctor told him he would be OK and he was back playing football three days later.

Kaka told his coaches about the incident but assured them he was fine and it was only after a couple of days training they realised all was not well. They could see he was holding back and sent him for more detailed tests. They showed he had fractured his spine. Every move he took during those days since the accident - including heading the ball - could have rendered him tetraplegic. And yet he survived.

Kaka puts that down to his religious beliefs - he is an Evangelical Protestant in a country that is overwhelmingly Catholic - and friends and family say his quick recovery from the accident helped him affirm his faith in God. It is not for nothing he celebrates every goal by pointing to the sky and thanking the Lord.

However, Kaka and his family are well-balanced enough to know that life is a lottery. Players need talent but the ones that do well in life, not just on the field, usually know they are very lucky to be doing what they do - and to be paid huge sums for doing so.

Scottish football writer Hugh McIlvanney once wrote that Jock Stein was a living negation of all those arrogant young men who persuaded themselves 'their largely fortuitous ability to kick a football or volley a tennis ball or belt out a pop song or tell a few jokes more acceptably than the next man is actually evidence of his own splendid mastery of his fate.'

I thought of McIlvanney's quote last week when talking to people who know Kaka. It seemed particularly apt bearing in mind the words of Milton Cruz, his former trainer.

'He's centred,' Cruz said of his best-known pupil. 'He doesn't think he's better than other people, he doesn't think he's special. He's humble and polite. He simply has a broader vision of the world. Kaka is the young man any father would love to have as a son.'

Trying to be punny

I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me.
Police were called to a childcare centre, where a three-year-old was resisting a rest.
Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He's all right now.
To write with a broken pencil is pointless.
When fish are in schools, sometimes they take debate.
A thief who stole a calendar got 12 months.
We'll never run out of mathematicians because they always multiply.
The professor discovered her theory of earthquakes was on shaky ground.
The dentist and manicurist fought tooth and nail.
What the definition of a will? It's a dead giveaway.

Hotel California [Eagles] cover

Wah I so wanna learn to play this song.

Learning bass/guitar

I taught Amos a little bit of bass today after practice. He seems to have the rhythm part as he just follows the kick, but we have to work on the notes, scales and fingering. Then Agape will have another bassist!
----------
I'm quite astounded by the progress Amos is making. He seems to have grasped the concept of notes pretty quickly and is able to find specific notes, although he takes a while. He's also learnt to mute the bass, use more than one finger to pluck the strings, and can press the frets hard enough. Now to get him up to speed. Will work on him every Thursday after practice.
----------
Started class with Wan Loong too. A little distracted but otherwise the interest is there. Started him off with a song he's interested in, Linkin Park's In The End. Interest is invaluable when teaching children. It makes learning so much easier and faster. He knows four chords, the names of the strings and how to read tabs. Now to work on changing chords quickly, notes and chord composition.
----------
Andrew seems to be interested in joining the band as a guitarist and bassist! My prayers have been answered. I'll have to work with him on Wednesdays before ALG, or on Thursdays if he's joining us.
----------
I'll work with Angela whenever I'm at Jasmine's place. Although there might be 'slower' progress. Just kidding lah. =]

Now and Forever by Richard Marx

Whenever I'm weary
From the battles that raged in my head
You made sense of madness
When my sanity hangs by a thread
I lose my way, but still you
Seem to understand
Now & forever,
I will be your man

Sometimes I just hold you
Too caught up in me to see
I'm holding a fortune
That heaven has given to me
I'll try to show you
Each and every way I can
Now & forever,
I will be your man

Now I can rest my worries
And always be sure
That I won't be alone, anymore
If I'd only known you were there
All the time,
All this time

Until the day the ocean
Doesn't touch the sand
Now & forever
I will be your man

For All You've Done by Don Moen

I normally don't like Don Moen songs, cos they're a little old-fashioned, but this one really spoke to me in church today. Well, actually we didn't even sing it, and God spoke to me while I was on the way to the washroom.

He assured me that He was in control despite my eczema, and that He still wanted the best for me. He also assured me that He would be glorified in this situation.

And so this is my prayer to Him, believing in my healing and submitting to His superior will.
-----------
For all You've done
For all You're going to do
We give You thanks
And lift our praise to You

We give thanks
We give praise
For we know
That all things work together
For our good
We give thanks
We give praise
For by faith
We know Your grace
Will see us through

For all those things
That we don't understand
We come by faith
And place them in Your hands

Even if we stumble
Even if we fall
You will not forsake us
You are King and Lord of all
Lord of all

Submitting to Leadership

Pastor Koo spoke about this in 1 Corinthians SOD class today, and it spoke to me again.

Sometimes we may disagree with our church leaders. I know I have. The question arises: Why should we do something we disagree with? For all you know, the leader might be wrong?

The answer to this is simple:
The leader CAN be wrong! Because we aren't perfect, leaders have every possibility and right to be wrong. However, as a subordinate of a leader, it is my job, serving in the ministry, to submit ot leadership.

God says in His Word that every authority on Earth and in Heaven has ben instituted by God. This means that bosses, governments, church leaders, parents etc have all been chosen by God. If we disobey them, we disobey God. Unless obeying them results in direct contravention of God's law, we should submit.

If the leader is doing wrong in the Lord's eyes, it is not your say to punish him/her. Rest assured, God is in control of the situation and will deal with it accordingly. Many mighty men of God have fallen under discipline from God.

God is always in control.

Global Day of Prayer Day 5

Topic: Pursuing the Peace of Christ [for relationships to be transformed]
Concerning: racism, poverty, violence, crime
----------
First, praise God for who He is, what He's done and what He's going to do. Spend at least 5-10min doing this, in tongues if you can. Then, we start our prayer. Try to claim God's promises from verses you know or have heard.

For the Glory of Christ:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Lord, You say in Your word that we are one body in you, and you say that in 1 Corinthians that you cannot stand division in the body. So, Lord, we commit the body of Christ onto You, both here in Singapore and around the world.

We believe that Your church, when standing together, can be such a mighty Earth-changing agent for you. I pray you remove hostilities deriving from doctrine, custom and other beliefs, and infuse a spirit of peace into your people. Let us realise that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against the devil. May the Church of God stand united against Satan that we might be stronger by doing so.

Then, people around the world will see you move through us so powerfully and clearly that they will be filled with awe.

Let us not focus on petty human differences, but instead focus our eyes on the common goal, which is to win souls for Your Kingdom. That alone is more important than our serving preferences.

For the Blessing of the Nations:
I also want to pray for your blessing and anointing upon your people. You say in Your Word that You have plans to prosper us and not to harm us: plans to give us a hope and a future. Lord we believe and claim this, but at the same time, let our head not be turned by material things, lest we hunger after that instead.

I pray we realise the importance of giving to you and storing up treasures in Heaven. Increase our genrosity in giving to You, that You might bless us even more abundantly.

Help us also to give to the poor and the needy. Help us realise that one reason why You bless us so richly is so that we can bless others in turn, by being a conduit or vessel for You. Use us mightily to help those around us through our generosity.

We also believe you are the all-powerful God, above any force Satan can throw at you. In this, I pray You bind the forces of corruption of the evil one, for example, terrorists who kill in the name of religion. I pray that Your will be done in all the wars and conflicts happening around the world, and I know that anything that happens has been orchestrated by You.

We believe You are the God of relationships and trust You will prevail in all these situations.

In Jesus' mighty name I pray, Amen!

NB: Guys, feel free to add your comments and prayers!

Full Metal Jacket

Review from Movies.com

Divided into two sections, Stanley Kubrick's film tackles dual ideas — how a man becomes a soldier and how that mentality becomes part of his identity. The first half of the film deals with the severe harshness of basic training as Joker (Matthew Modine) and the rest of the boys become fighting men under the relentless, profane Gunnery Sgt. Hartman (Lee Ermey). Once the story moves to Vietnam, the film takes on a more abstract, fatalistic tone as it moves to a harrowing conclusion.

My take

I guess this movie is a victim of its time. This was made in 1987 by Stanley Kubrick, but since then better war movies have been made. This was making me want more, but it did not deliver. Still this is worth watching for R. Lee Ermey's gunnery sergeant Hartman, which brings all your BMT nightmares to shocking life.
The fat boy they called Gomer Pyle (actual screen name Leonard Lawrence) for his ungainly impression shows us what our teasing of the 'butt' of the jokes can drive them to do. He eventually shot and killed Hartman and then himself. Tragically so, as I think Hartman really believed he had motivated Pyle to become a Marine rifleman with his harsh, cut-to-the-bone words.
But Pyle's (Vincent d'Onofrio) eyes as he loaded his rifle with a full metal jacket, lingo for a full magazine of live rounds, was chilling. Imagine if the guy we teased in Hawk Coy Platoon 4 had done that.

Why do cats and dogs look at our eyes?

Teckseng brought up an intriguing question.

Why is it that cats and dogs no where to look at us i.e. in our eyes? Answers on a postcard please.

Why do we pray?

Had difficulty answering this in ALG today. Why do we need to pray when God already knows what we want?

We came up with answers like: God wants us to experience asking and waiting; so we learn to acknowledge God as provider; to build our faith.

Then when I came home, my mum shared this verse with me: 1 Thessalonians 5:17 - Never stop praying.

Just three words? Yep.

According to the Life Application Study Bible, a Christian's persistence is an expression of faith that God answers prayer. When you feel tired of praying, know that God is present, always listening, always answering - in ways that He knows are best.

We also talked about good practices in prayer, like praying aloud, and agreeing with others' prayers. Also, prayer is just like talking to Your Heavenly Father. Don't worry about getting words wrong or not knowing what to say. God looks at our heart.

Economy on Legs

A guy is walking down the street with his friend. He says to his friend, "I'm a walking economy."

His friend replies, "How's that?"

"Well, my hairline is in recession, my stomach is a victim of inflation, and this is putting me into a deep depression."

Hamster Rescue Mission

Just a hamster rescue mission started by Yinglei.
----------
Hi brothers and sisters,

Just a few days ago, my bro's friend dumped a cage with 6 hamsters at my place. I've been fighting to keep the hamsters, but my mom just wouldn't let me keep even one of them. As for now, the cage is lying outside my house because my mom finds the hamsters stinky. I really feel for the hamsters and hope I can find them good owners, (before they die in my mom's hands). So if anyone is interested in adopting a
hamster or 2 or even more, pls let me know asap. Do ask arnd if anyone is keen abt keeping hamsters. Meanwhile, I'll try my best to care for the hamsters.

Bak Chor Mee Man II

Yes Mr Brown is back, this time acting as Bak Chor Mee Man again to talk about increasing prices and paying top dollar for top-grade bak chor mee.

Listen to it here.

We Are the Champions by Queen

Champions indeed. Despite a domineering performance, United managed to lose to Tevez's sucker punch, but all that didn't matter once the trophy came out and everybody started to party. Here's to another party next year, Messrs. Giggs and Neville!

All About My Mother

Synopsis by Flixster

Manuela, a nurse and single mother in her late thirties must come to terms with the tragic loss of her only son, Esteban, when he is struck by a car. She never told Esteban who he was, "your father died long before you were born" was all she ever told him. In memory of her son--who's his father's namesake--Manuela leaves Madrid and goes to Barcelona in search of Esteban's father. However, the man that she left behind, eighteen years ago when she was pregnant, is now a transvestite named Lola. The search for a man with that name cannot be simple. And indeed it isn't.

My take

What touched me most about this movie is when the mother of the nun, Rosa (Penelope Cruz), who got pregnant and subsequently HIV-infected, asked herself what she'd done wrong with her daughter. She said that Rosa had been like an alien to her since her teenage years. That really struck a chord with me. Parenthood is all about learning as we go along. No one really created a fail-safe guide to parenthood.

A parent may do everything right but still have a failure of a child, or vice versa. Look at Manuela (Cecilia Roth). She raised her son as a single mother, juggling that with her job as a nurse (just like my mum), and yet she lost a aspiring writer son to a freak motor accident.

Parents have to do the best they can for their children, and the rest are in God's hands.

I loved this movie because it spoke of a mother's love and the disappointments she faces. This was true for both Manuela and Rosa's mum. They rose above their circumstances: Manuela's husband became a transvestite and left her and her son died. Rosa's mum saw her daughter get pregnant and HIV-positive, and had to bury her.

Yet, a mother's love carries on. It truly is the greatest love in the world.

Jim Cymbala's When God's People Pray

We start this campaign this Wed.

Just thought I'd add that this campaign represents a challenge to the apprentices and I on many counts.

Firstly, this is a more "serious" and "spiritual" topic compared to busyness. Hence, discussions may be more serious. We must share freely to build one another up in this essential part of Christian living.

Secondly, each session requires us to be super on-time. Something we are, ahem, not very good at, myself included. So we really do need to keep to the time frame given.

Thirdly, this campaign requires us to be independent. If we take a closer look at Session 1 (which we should be doing), we'll notice a section called Personal Journey. This should be done ALONE, at home or at work. If we leave this out, then we are not fufilling the full potential of this book. However, only do this part AFTER ALG each week.

Fourthly, do pray along with all of us for a successful campaign. Not having Joey around is quite a handicap for the apprentices and I. However, I choose to look at it positively and see that people like Yewhock, Ben and Joycelyn are given an opportunity to try their hand at facilitating.

Anointing with Oil

5:13 Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone in good spirits? He should sing praises. 5:14 Is anyone among you ill? He should summon the elders of the church, and they should pray for him and anoint 15 him with oil in the name of the Lord. 5:15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick and the Lord will raise him up – and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 5:16 So confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great effectiveness.
-------------
My mum gave me these verses to read in the morning. Our church sometimes practises this old ritual, and I figure, why not? As Selwyn Hughes said in the latest issue of Every Day with Jesus, "even after anointing with oil healing does not always come." But he concludes even that is "no reason to disobey a divine command."

I'll try it out soon.

Straw prank

Next time your friend sticks two straws in his/her drink, try this harmless prank. When he/she isn't there (e.g. in washroom etc.), remove both straws and bend one in half and stick it in with both ends facing up, so it looks that there're still two straws. Get your camera ready to record a priceless video that, truly, sucks. =]

Being John Malkovich

Review from Movies.com

A rather hirsute John Cusack stars as a down-on-his-luck New York City street puppeteer who is forced by lack of prospects and income to take an entry-level job as a file clerk on the seven and a halfth floor of an office building. Seven and a halfth? That's odd, certainly, but not half as odd as the passageway he discovers behind a file drawer one day that leads directly into the brain of actor John Malkovich (played by none other). Puppet boy and a vampish co-worker (Catherine Keener) on whom he develops an obsessive crush decide that this startling and serendipitous discovery presents a rather unique money- making opportunity, so they take out an ad in the newspaper and start charging respondents hundreds of dollars for the chance to enjoy their Warhol-ian 15 minutes of fame courtesy of Mr. Malkovich. Matters begin to get ever more complicated as the puppeteer, his wife (played by a seriously glammed-down Cameron Diaz), the co-worker, and Malkovich play out a rather convoluted round robin of sexual attraction within the arena of the actor's consciousness.

My take

This truly genre-defying Spike Jonze experiment is so weird on so many counts. The idea of controlling someone's life by getting into his mind just raises so many existential and ethical issues. In this convoluted story though, we just realise the tragic lengths people will go to prolong a fantastical life, at the expense of their own.

Mother's Day

I am a sinner. I have nothing planned for Mother's Day this Sunday. Maybe dinner will do. Even that is tricky to plan as my mum's on the Board, my dad's driving etc.
----------
Have decided to bring my mum to Bao Today at Marina Square or Vivocity. Going next Sunday to avoid the crush.

Spider-man 3

This was the best of the (supposed) trilogy. The focus was not on the SFX, acting etc. Instead, what we saw was the simple theme of forgiveness and doing the right thing coming to the fore. Guess Hollywood's now flying the moral flag eh?
The villains were truly disappointing though. Expected so much more of Venom (Topher Grace), but in the end just saw some plagiarising young hack unable to accept that he's to blame for his failure.
Sandman (Thomas Haden Church) too, just fell through my fingers a bit. Is the New Goblin better? No. Just another schizophrenic young man with false information. Took Albert the Butler to make him see the error of his ways.
A tad too long at the beginning, that left 30mins to tie all the loose ends together with the final showdown.
Venom is frightened by sonorous material? Please. That's like SpongeBob being defeated by a hairdryer.
And how Venom came to attach itself to Spidey (Tobey Maguire)? More coincidental than a Channel 8 drama.
I liked the emo-Spidey look though. And there were some genuine chuckle moments too.
And I think there will be a Spider-man 4, if the producers want to milk us for more cash.
And yes, Kirsten Dunst smokes.

Formula One comes to Singapore!

Yes, F1 is finally coming to Singapore decades after LKY first said no. We are having a street circuit, along with Valencia (seven-year contract), with the possibility of a night race. We will run the race for five years from 2008, with a possible five-year extension. I'll look to attend at least one race, although it's really gonna set me back.

You know how the ah peks climb trees to watch S-League matches? I've very sure these intrepid freeloaders will find a way to witness this expensive event for free too. Could be embarrassing for Singapore as the camera zooms in on a tree with people in it. But I'll be right behind them. =]

Cycling

Went cycling at East Coast Park again. Something was wrong with the handlebars as the steering felt so loose. Enjoyed it even more though it was tough towards the feeling hot and bothered with the eczema again.

Also managed to spend $120 at the dentist on sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) sand-blasting my teeth and getting a filling done. Turns out that I need to have a wisdom tooth removed soon. Oh no. Injection in the mouth? I'll just faint.

SAFRA screw-up

It took almost eight weeks, yes, EIGHT WEEKS, for SAFRA to issue me a cheque for $32 to reimburse my membership renewal that I didn't even want. This despite three reminders on my part. Nonsense.

My Freedom from Busyness Plan

My gosh, just finished writing out my 20-part plan. A few things I've already begun to implement, and have roped in Jasmine, Ben and Joshua to be accountability partners. The true test will come when I'm busy in July.

Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials

My goodness. I've sure learnt a lot just from watching half this DVD. I've covered only the 8-beat and 16-beat rock grooves, with a little funk, but it's enough food for thought to last me a while. But again, practice is everything, which I don't get enough of.

Chelsea 0-0 United

Winners all around here.

Sir Alex got to rest his players for the home game against the Hammers.
Mourinho got to preserve his unbeaten home record.
Sir Alex did a little snub with his First XI selection; only six of the players John Terry and co. applauded onto the pitch are eligible for a Premiership medal.
United fans got to see the future of United - not much there I must say.
Chelsea fans get to claim superiority in a meaningless game.

As Joey Tribbiani (Matt le Blanc) of FRIENDS said, "What's not to like?"

As Simon Cowell would say, "It was... OK. It's not bad, but it's not your best performance either." Attractive leads, until you realise they're just 19! Esp Vanessa Anne Hudgens. Girls would like Zac Efron who looks like Matt from 7th Heaven (Barry Watson).

I can cycle!

Yes after years of ribbing from friends, frequent dreams of being able to cycle only to wake up disappointed and taunts from my sister after she learnt cycling recently, I finally took up the gauntlet to learn cycling. In the end, it took me just 20 minutes under Teckseng's expert tutelage to learn. Before long, I was hurtling down East Coast Park at unimaginable speeds. And yes, not a single fall. Who's the man!

Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea

Chelsea must know their game is up. The icing on the cake would be to see a mass brawl in this game or extremely destructive tackling from the erstwhile sissy Gunners. That would mean suspensions and injuries galore in time for the FA Cup Final. Anyhow, anything other than a win for Jose's Blues will mean party time for United, and Stamford Bridge being turned into the host for a coronation ceremony. Now that would be the cherry on top.
------------
And we've done it without kicking a ball. Arsenal did us a favour by holding 10-man Chelsea to a 1-1 draw. We are the champions!

Man City 0-1 United

This is it. Our chance to reclaim the title on our neighbour's home patch. If Arsenal can do the business at home, then we are home and dry.

And we've done it. A scrappy game but a much-improved performance after the San Siro debacle. Not good points-wise on Yahoo, but three points nonetheless.

Let Me Let Go by Faith Hill & Vince Gill

I'm so glad Jasmine taught me to let go of friends that don't matter. Who do I mean? I'm talking about friends that don't make the effort to keep in touch or ask you out, despite your efforts. Simply put, the don't reciprocate your love. Which is fine.

I put it to you that these 'friends' simply hog your feelings and energy, to the point that your efforts are being taken away from the people trying to get your attention and the friends who truly matter. It's a no-brainer, really. Let's give our love, time and energy to the people who truly deserve it.

By letting these people go, they won't miss me, and neither will I miss them. It's truly a relief to be free from the desire to always live for their ensorsement and have them talk about only the things they like or want to talk about. Made me feel like a vanity mirror. You know the one in Snow White, where the evil witch keeps asking who's the fairest of them all? Yeah, stop using me to stroke your ego.

If your find some of your relationships one-way and energy-sapping, it's easier and better to let them go.

Of course, be aware of people who you are doing the same to, lest they let you go too. And don't let everyone go, too. Make the effort to keep in touch and involve them in your lives. If they reciprocate, you know that there's a friend worth having.

Milan 3-0 United (5-3 on aggregate)

As a concerned United fan, I cannot help thank God for a resounding 3-0 whopping rather than a narrow loss. I'm sure Kaka said his prayers the night before which could explain how he took his goal so well, but United were completely and utterly outclassed, outplayed, outthought and outfought.

The ineptitude was a sight to behold. The pressing game Milan employed has been weathered by United so often before and used to their advantage when their opponent tired. This time though, United just stood off their opponents even when 2-0 down, and only really got belatedly started after an hour. Even then, Dida didn't have a save to make. I dare say Roma played better when they were beaten 7-1.

I hope Ferguson sees that he must strengthen this summer. He will win the Premier League title because he is too far ahead for Chelsea to reel in. One suspects he wouldn't be as confident if the season ended in June.

Reinforcements, beginning with Owen Hargreaves, are needed urgently, especially ones that are good enough to displace those simply not good enough. Silvestre, O'Shea, Giggs, Scholes, Carrick, Saha, van der Sar, Brown and Fletcher all need to go because they're either too old or too inferior.

It was said Fergie was building his third great team. It seems he hasn't even started.

My eczema

Hi guys,

I really want to thank those of you who came on Monday evening for the Global Day of Prayer launch. Didn't we just have a great time of prayer together as a church and family of God?

On a personal note, I wish to thank all of you who prayed together with me for my eczema. As you know, I have been suffering from eczema since I was three. So that's about 21 years now. It hasn't been easy, and it's probably gotten much worse in the last two years.

Lately, I guess I've been feeling a bit frustrated with my condition and kept asking myself why there hadn't been any improvement despite years of treatment and prayer. I believed and still believe in God's power of healing, but I just didn't see it happening in my life. All along, I hear accounts of miraculous healing from people around me, but never to me. It's like hearing how all your cousins get ang pow during CNY, but you never get any. Or more pertinently, seeing all your friends get attached and married and finding you're left on the shelf.

As a result, I also got disappointed with God for not healing me despite my greatest desire to be healed. I kept thinking that there was something I was not doing right.

Today, however, I have realised that God still retains the power of healing in my life. When he does it, is purely up to Him. But I believe, together with my family and Jasmine, that it is only a matter of time. It is not easy waiting for this to happen, but I pray God will increase my patience and faith in Him to do a miraculous work.

It is a daily struggle, not knowing whether it will be a good skin day or a bad skin day when I wake up the next day. I certainly have never gotten used to it. As Jasmine can testify, I can also be moody and grumpy when it's a bad skin day. I am grateful to her for her patience and sayang-ing when I do feel under the weather. =]

I believe God will heal me one day. Until then, as Bon Jovi sang, I will keep the faith.

"For I will give health back to you, and I will heal you of your wounds." - Jeremiah 30:17a

Pray for Pastor Koo

Hi guys,

I have heard from both Lydia and Joycelyn, and want to give credit to them for thinking of it, though I was considering it as well.

As we pray each day, please spend some time praying for Pastor Koo. I believe his message last Sunday was truly one from the heart. Let pray for him to continue to draw strength from God, for God's anointing to be upon him, his ministry and his family, and to give him the courage to address the issues that he alluded to in his
message.

Having known him all these years, I know Pastor would never say something if he didn't feel strongly about it. For him to bring this up on Sunday and not at a leaders' meeting, for example, tells me how important this is, and how heavily this is weighing upon him.

Let's commit our time to praying for him and encouraging him when we can, on Sunday or by email etc.

Let's show him what we mean by agape love, and what it means to be a community and a church of Jesus Christ, as our name suggests.

Studying Law

UK Immigration Officer: Purpose of visit?

Visitor: I'm here to study law, sir.
Officer: You know, you must have a lot of lawyers in Singapore.

Visitor: Why do you say that?
Officer: Well, i've been here for a good twenty years, and I'd say 80% of Singaporeans I see here say they're here to read law.
Visitor: Oh, really? That's really something i never knew. Hard to believe in fact.
Officer: Just you watch, then. You just stand here until the next Singaporean comes along, and I'll bet he's here to read law.

*Visitor waits for 5 mins, Ah Beng comes to immigration counter*

Officer: Purpose of visit?
Ah Beng: Study lor.

Management vs Engineers

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost.

She reduced altitude and spotted a man below. She descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago but I don't know where I am."

The man below replied, "You're in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You're between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude."

"You must be an engineer," said the balloonist.

"I am", replied the man. "How did you know?"

"Well, answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I've no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help at all. If anything you've delayed my trip even more."

The man below responded, "You must be in management."

"I am," replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?"

"Well," said the man, "You don't know where you are or where you're going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise which you've no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems."

10 Tips for Freelance Writers by Laura J. Thompson

When I first decided to become a freelance writer, I didn't have any help at all. In fact, I was completely at a loss because the industry is very "hush-hush". You're expected to make it on your own - or not make it at all.

Of course, that is true of many industries because the secrets of the craft are well-kept by those who have already achieved success. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult for talented newcomers to make it in the writing world. If you don't have guidance, you're bound to fall flat on your face. With that in mind, here are my top ten tips for freelance writers.

1. Always Get It In Writing

Verbal agreements may be legally binding in the United States, but they sure are hard to prove. He said---she said arguments are rarely successful in the courtroom, and if you don't have any witnesses to your agreement, it's almost as if it didn't happen.

If you're hoping to become a success as a freelance writer, you need to make all agreements in writing. A contract or service agreement is a great first step, but make sure that any additional agreements are likewise put to paper. Trust me: It'll save you months of heartache in the future.

2. Save Everything - No Matter What

You never know when you're going to need an e-mail or a contract or a first draft down the line, so get in the habit of saving everything for at least a year. My advice is to print everything from your computer and save the hardcopy in boxes or file cabinets in your office. Plastic totes are great for this purpose.

When you save everything, you always have a record of your progress and your communication. If a question is ever raised with a colleague or client, you'll have the proof in written form.

3. Open a Business Bank Account

When it comes to taxes or sorting out pay agreements, you won't want to separate your personal transactions from your business transactions. To avoid this confusion, open a business bank account and conduct all business through it alone.

You might also want to apply for a business credit card and open a retirement plan in the name of your business. Keeping business and personal transactions separate will make your life much easier.

4. Learn How to Say "No"

Just because you're in business as a freelance writer doesn't mean that you have to take every project that crosses your desk. In fact, many projects won't appeal to you at all - in which case, say "no"!

In my early days as a freelance writer, I took every project I could get my hands on. The result? I was depressed, overwrought and strung out. I couldn't handle the load and I was frustrated by the projects with which I didn't agree. You'll make more money if you filter each project through your heart and mind before saying "yes".

5. Give Yourself a Break

Freelance writing isn't like any other career in the world. If you were to write from the time you woke up until the time you went to bed, your brain would be mush in a matter of weeks. Instead, give yourself a healthy workday (eight or nine hours will suffice) and turn off the computer once you've reached your limit.

Burn-out is common among aspiring freelance writers, and if you don't give your mind and body a break, you'll lose the will to write at all. Beyond that, give yourself a vacation every few months. Go to the beach or a hotel or a favorite theme park and get writing off your mind for a few days.

6. Find Peace and Quiet

While some writers can work in the family room with the TV blaring, the washing machine running and the fan on high, most find this atmosphere a hindrance to creativity. As quickly as possible, find a location in your house that is quiet and free from distraction. A spare bedroom, a large closet or even a nook in the garage will work fine.

Tell your family that when you are working, you need to be left alone. If you have young children, take a break every couple of hours to play with them, and then go back to work. Your family will understand that you need to concentrate in order to be productive.

7. Make Time for Administrative Tasks

A self-employed freelance writer is different from an employee. You are not only responsible for writing for your clients, but you are also required to handle all of your administrative tasks. This eats up more of your time than you probably think, so leave a couple of hours every day for this purpose.

Remember also that you aren't paid for paperwork and banking, so adjust your prices accordingly. Most freelance writers work on actual projects an average of twenty-seven hours per week. This means that the other thirteen hours of your work week are spent on unpaid tasks.

8. Don't Let Your Guard Down

I made many mistakes early in my freelance writing career, but this was the worst. Be careful about how you handle your clients. If you become too friendly and make work more of a social event, they will walk all over you. Maintain professionalism in all that you do and don't be afraid to demand payment.

It's important that you don't allow yourself to be taken advantage of. If a client asks for additional time to pay or extra work for free, simply explain your policies regarding those issues and come to an agreement.

9. Give Yourself Reasonable Deadlines

Never promise a project before you think you'll be able to get it done. In fact, until you get a good idea of how fast you work, add three days to your most liberal estimate. If a client expects a project in three weeks, but gets it in two, he'll be thrilled! But if you promise it in two and you take three, you've probably just lost a client.

If, however, you run into a situation where you don't think you'll be able to finish by the deadline, simply talk to your client. Explain that you might take a few extra days, but that you've made it a top priority.

10. NEVER Work For Free

Even if you've never published anything in your life, you don't have to prove yourself to anyone. Working for free or severely discounted prices will only hurt your career. Come up with a few samples for your website that show off your talent and offer those pieces to your prospects, but never agree to write something for free. Ever!

Jobs, jobs, jobs

For all those who think that you are in a rut.

1. My first job was working in an Orange Juice factory, but I got canned. I couldn't concentrate.

2. Then, I worked as a Lumberjack, but I just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the axe.

3. After that, I tried to be a Tailor, but I just wasn't suited for it - mainly because it was a sew-sew job.

4. Next, I tried working in a Muffler Factory, but that was too exhausting.

5. Then,I tried to be a Chef - figured it would add a little spice to my life,
but I just didn't have the thyme.

6. I attempted to be a Deli Worker, but any way I sliced it I couldn't cut the mustard.

7. My best job was a Musician, but eventually I found I wasn't noteworthy.

8. I studied a long time to become a Doctor, but I didn't have any patience.

9. Next, was a job in a Shoe Factory. I tried but I just didn't fit in.

10. I tried to be a photographer but I didn't get much exposure.

11. I became a Fisherman, although I was hooked I discovered that I couldn't live on my net income.

12. I managed to get a good job working for a Pool Maintenance Company, but the work was just too draining.

13. So then I got a job in a Workout Centre, but they said I wasn't fit for the job.

14. After many years of trying to find steady work I finally got a job as a Historian - until I realized there was no future in it.

15. I was a chauffeur for awhile but didn't have the drive.

16. I became an undertaker but it was a dead-end job.

17. My last job was working in Starbucks, but I had to quit because it was always the same old grind.

18. SO, I TRIED RETIREMENT AND FOUND THAT I'M PERFECT FOR THE JOB. Man, do I enjoy it! And that's how I got to where I am today!

Phantom of the Opera

My second-ever musical and I must say it was a feast for the senses. Nothing earth-moving or life-changing, but I must say it was thoroughly enjoyable. The songs really stuck and the stage effects really opened my mind about how you can manipulate the stage to so engage the senses. From crashing chandelier to subterranean lake, masquerade ball to graveyard, the props were a sight to behold. The singing was a treat too, though I can't say the same for the wanna-be singers I had on my left and right. Spoiler sia.

Pay rise

No lah, not about our ministers. But Minister Teo Chee Hean just announced a $50 pay hike for all NSFs. Why not during my time?! On top of that, he announced a 20% increase of reservist allowance of NS KAHs. Again, I miss out. Phooey.

The demolition in all its glory.

George Carlin's Views on Aging

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions.

"How old are you?" "I'm four-and-a-half!" You're never thirty-six-and-a-half. You're four-and-a-half, going on five! That's the key.

You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead.

"How old are you?" "I'm gonna be 16!" You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life... you become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony. You BECOME 21. YES!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're just a sour-dumpling. What's wrong? What's changed?

You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50, and your dreams are gone.

But wait! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!

So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.

You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday!

You get into your 80s and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; "I Was JUST 92."

Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. "I'm 100-and-a-half!"

May you all make it to a healthy 100-and-a-half!

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay "them".

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

And if you don't send this to at least 8 people - who cares? But do share this with someone. We all need to live life to its fullest each day!

Is Teaching Really Worth It?

(from a S'pore teacher's blog)

The following comments in no way represent my point of view. For now lah.

1) I hate waking up at the crack of dawn.

2) I hate collecting money from students. I hate having to count money collected from 40 students. I hate having to bring change of money to class. I hate it that 70% of my time with students involves collecting money from them. I hate it when people ask me why I can’t ask the admin staff which MOE has provided to every school to help with such mundane tasks. I hate explaining for the zillionth time that the admin staff in my school (and possibly in many schools) do not help teachers to collect money from students. They help the principal and vice-principal with their admin work, not teachers. Are we clear about that now?

Oh money is a pain, especially when 1/2 your students cannot afford the $70 the school wants. Then there is the $200 withdrawal from edusave. I have to collect the forms, then haunt the students when it turns out they don’t have that amount in their edusave accounts. If they can’t pay $70, what makes you think they can come out with $200 in cash? And the admin staff? Well, the only help I get is constant reminders that my students have not paid up.

3) I hate having to queue up at the copier to zap notes and worksheets for my students. I hate it that about 80+ teachers have to share two copier machines. So the queue is long, and a lot of negotiation goes on at the copier everyday as we decide who should let whom go first, who needs the notes more urgently, and who can clear the paper jam at the machine. I hate it that no one has invented a machine which can handle the copying load in a typical Singapore school so that it won’t break down every 3 days.

4) I hate it when, after beating ferocious colleagues at the copier and finally being able to zap the notes which I have painstakingly prepared for my students, I find them lying on the floor in the classroom later, with shoe prints on them. I hate it when I realise, once again, that teaching is often a thankless job.

5) I hate it when people think Teach Less Learn More means I have more free time. I hate explaining that there’s no such thing called Content Reduction. Tell me which school has experienced Content Reduction and I’ll transfer there. Our syllabus has not been cut, OK? We just move topics around. Hence we really don’t know how to teach less. Period.

6) I hate teaching National Education because I don’t know how to do it without sounding like Mao Zedong. And my students hate it when I so much as mention words like “history of Singapore” or “loyalty”. I think National Education is important but I don’t want to to teach it in such a direct way because my students tell me I’m brainwashing them and I hate to be a brainwasher.

Not to mention Sex education and moral education which the students regard as big jokes.

7)I hate having to keep a red pen in every one of my handbags, because I am constantly having to mark something. I hate bringing scripts with me everywhere I go. I hate it that my marking is never finished, even on the last day of the school year, because there just isn’t enough time for teachers to mark their students’ work, and because we have to do so many other non-teaching-related work. And I hate it when people ask me if my marking is done! I am never going to say yes. There are two types of marking - urgent ones (like exam papers and other important work) and non-urgent ones. Guess which gets pushed away when there are events to plan, carry out and other admin nonsense to do? Guess who suffers in the end?

8) New initiatives like bluesky, white space, TLLM, I&E, SEL, SL. All within a space of 3 years?! What do they think we teachers are? And everytime they introduce something, we have to go for workshops and training to learn about it. Then we are expected to go back to school and put it into practice immediately.

9) I hate it when during my work appraisal, my boss reminds me that teaching is my bread and butter and that I have to do it well, and then merrily gives me ten non-teaching projects to do. Why can’t I just concentrate on my bread and butter?

Yes and they imply that even though I carried out all the non-teaching projects, I am not doing enough for my form class because I do not call their parents enough. Well you try organising community work for the whole school on your own, running a CCA with no money to hire an instructor, organising inter-class competitions, holding enrichment camps and putting together public performances and finding the time to chat with 40 parents on a regular basis. And those are just the official things I do.

10) Rankings. I understand the need to be assessed. I understand the need to maybe give us a grade at the end of the year. But why the mixed messages? A - C grades mean vary levels of exceeding expectations. D grade, apparently, means meeting expectations. Yet, if you get a D grade, you do not get a performance bonus. Fair enough after all you are just meeting expectations. But if you get a D grade 3 times in a row, you need to be reassessed by ministry officials because it is not enough to meet expectations. Then you might get put on probation. This ranking is so stressful that I know of teachers who do not want to be promoted because after a certain level, you are expected to carry out initiatives that has impact on the cluster level (i.e.: impact about 13 schools) and really, how many teachers have the time or energy to do that on top of their normal workload? Oh and did I mention that you don’t actually get to know your grading (unless of course you are a D-grader)? The whole thing is shrouded in secrecy.

Lawyers

Charlotte, North Carolina.

A lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against, among other things, fire.

Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars and without yet having made even his first premium payment on the policy the lawyer filed a claim against the insurance company.

In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires."

The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason, that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion.

The lawyer sued.. and WON!

Delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company, which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be unacceptable fire" and was obligated to pay the claim.

Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the cigars lost in the "fires".

After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON!!!

With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine.

God of No Mercy

An European tourist was visiting a temple in Singapore when he noticed two statues, a man and a woman by the altar.

He asked the monk what was the significance of the two.

The monk explained that in the Chinese system of yin and yang, positives must always be balanced by negatives, and having the two statues ensures that the universal balance was maintained.

"This statue of the woman is the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan-Yin."

"What about the other one?" asked the tourist.

"This one is the God of No Mercy, Kuan-Yew."

Lookalikes! II

Didn't believe it so I tried it again. Slightly better results, I think.

Lookalikes!

This is embarrassing. Apparently I look like these guys. What's with the Jap dudes? And David Hasselhoff?!?!

Love not Change or Judge II

Just to add on a few things I learnt from Ps Koo's 1 Corinthians SOD class.

The Bible teaches us to judge people's actions but not their intentions. In other words, if you see Christians sinning openly, don't just read Matthew 7 and say that you have no business judging them. Look what 1 Cor 5:3 says:
"Even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. And I have already passed judgment on the one who did this, just as if I were present."

Paul is saying that even though he is not in Corinth, he has already based his judgment on what he has heard from trustworthy sources.

So when we witness a sin first-hand, it is our duty to remind the sinner of his sin. If we find out about it from hearsay, please make the effort to corroborate this account with the person first before passing judgment, lest we become perpetuators of rumours and slander.

What then if ther person refuses to repent?
Paul asks mockingly in 1 Cor 6:5:
"I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers?"

He is saying that we should refrain from involving ungodly mediators e.g. outside friends, the justice system, etc. to resolve our differences. Instead, we should do as Matthew 18:15-17 says:
"15"If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. 16But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.' 17If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector."

Here, we have a SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for intervention, each step more serious than the previous. Notice we should not escalate the whole thing by gossiping about it to people. We should instead settle it one-to-one. Failing which, we bring a few godly witnesses, which should include your leader to analyse the problem. If this fails to settle the issue, then Pastor will come into the
picture. If this perosn refuses to listen to the Church, then Pastor will decide the consequences. People have been allowed to leave the church before in situations like these due to their obstinacy.

Take note that this applies to you as well, as you could be in the wrong as well. Let's be open to godly counsel and humble when we are in the wrong.

Love not Change or Judge

Maggie shared something in prayer meeting today that really spoke to me. She said that God wants us to love people, not to change them. God said love thy neighbour, not change thy neighbour. Too often we try to do God's job, when all we need to do is love them with God's love. No wonder we feel frustrated and over-burdened!

Neither should we feel disappointed when people don't reciprocate, because we are just doing what God asked us to do. Why should we expect gratitude when He got none from the Jews?

My flip-over calendar has been stuck at 17 Jan. A bit lazy perhaps, but I haven't really felt the need to move on from what it says. It still speaks to me:
"God has a great race for you to run. Under His care you will go where you've never been and serve in ways you've never dreamed. But you have to drop some stuff. How can you share grace if you are full of guilt?"

Lastly, just as we should not try to change people but let God change them, we should not judge people, lest we be judged. You should know that this is a pet peeve of mine. I really dislike it when people second-guess people's intentions or talk about people behind their back. Simply put, these people could just as easily be doing the same behind mine. Besides, the Bible says to build one another up, not tear each other down!

Cerebral conversation

Had this intriguing discussion over dinner at Jack's Place. Explained to her the solution the "more coffee or more tea" conundrum, but she said that what her mind told her made my mathematical proof incredible.

Our conclusion?
That theory has its place as absolute but only in a set of given conditions. Unfortunately, in the practical and arbitrary world, there rarely exists such conditions. As such it is almost impossible to achieve cause and effect results.
Some examples include human error in doctors misdiagnosing illnesses. Symptoms may present themselves overwhelmingly as that of a particular illness but due to certain conditions not made known to the doctor, have been misconstrued as something else. It isn't really the doctor's fault, as he applied medical theory to his best ability, but the fact is the patient is still ill and unhappy. The doctor has to keep applying theory after theory to get the right result. This is an example of the dissonance between the lab conditions and practical conditions.

Moreover, this is also observable psychologically. I might be able to tell a person the right thing to do from my third-person view. But the person may feel differently. No one's at fault here. The person is right because he cannot feel objectively because of his emotions and how he feels. I am right because I feel it is the best thing to do in his situation, though I do not have to deal with the conflicting emotions he has. Empathy goes some way to helping him appreciate the appropriate and objective solution.

Jasmine, could you embellish these points?

Maths teasers

There are two cups of equal capacity, with equal volumes of coffee and tea respectively. I take a full teaspoon of coffee and add it to the cup with tea. I then give it a good stir. Then I take a teaspoon of this mixture and add this to the cup of coffee.
Is there now more tea in the coffee, or more coffee in the tea?

Imagine that there is a metal band around the Earth that fits snugly such that there is no gap between the Earth and the band. Assume that the Earth is a perfect sphere.
I snip off the band and lengthen it by adding a 10-metre strip. I then adjust the band back in place, thereby ensuring that te gap between the band and the Earth is uniform all around. How big is the gap?

Whose Line Is It Anyway? Drinking Hoedown!

The other day while playing golf I had a lot to drink
As I reached the first tee I could barely think
I hit the ball really hard, the guy is barely alive
Which just goes to prove, if you drink, don't drive

Whose Line Is It Anyway? Shoplifting Hoedown!

The other day I stole something it really was a sin
It was a little revolver made of gelatin
It was really a bad idea, something I should've slept on
'Cos I was arrested for carrying a congealed weapon

-----------

Shopping the correct way can be such a bore
I have to steal everything when I go in a store
Not to look and take things can be really hard
Bus it guess I shouldn't 'cos I am a security guard

The Lord is my Shepherd
That's Relationship!

That's Supply!

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.
That's Rest!

He leadeth me beside the still waters.
That's Refreshment!

He restoreth my soul
That's Healing!

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness.
That's Guidance!

For His name sake
That's Purpose!

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.
That's Testing!

I will fear no evil.
That's Protection!

For Thou art with me
That's Faithfulness!

Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me,
That's Discipline!

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
That's Hope!

Thou anointest my head with oil,
That's Consecration!

My cup runneth over.

Strange English

1. "Verb" is a noun.
2. Is there another word for synonym?
3. Why is "monosyllabic" such a long word?
4. Why does "cleave" mean both split apart and stick together?
5. Why doesn't "onomatopoeia" sound like what it is?
6. Why isn't "palindrome" spelt the same way backwards?
7. Why do overlook and oversee mean different things?
8. What is another word for thesaurus?

Letters from Iwo Jima

Even better than Flags of Our Fathers, which I didn't really connect with.
The sheer desperation of the Japanese, officers and men alike, drove them to communal suicide. Our hero, Saigo, watches on horrified, as he ponders what is the best way to die. Some are not afforded the same luxury of choice.
What is your enemy really like? They are just like you, actually. They fear who's on the other side, they fear death, they fear not seeing their family again.
In the end, we realise the whole pointlessness of war and the futility of suicide, but we understand why in our world, people prefer these abhorrences to the alternatives of compromise and losing face.

Plot: This is the story of the battle of Iwo Jima, between the United States and Japan, during World War II, as told from the perspective of two good friends serving in the Japanese forces, who watch helplessly throughout various battles as their comrades are killed.

Dreamgirls

Way over the top.

Set in the turbulent early 1960s to mid-70s, "Dreamgirls" follows the rise of a trio of women--Effie, Deena and Lorrell--who have formed a promising girl group called The Dreamettes. At a talent competition, they are discovered by an ambitious manager named Curtis Taylor Jr., who offers them the opportunity of a lifetime: to become the back-up singers for headliner James "Thunder" Early. Curtis gradually takes control of the girls' look and sound, eventually giving them their own shot in the spotlight as The Dreams. That spotlight, however, begins to narrow in on Deena, finally pushing the less attractive Effie out altogether. Although the Dreams become a crossover phenomenon, they soon realize that the cost of fame and fortune may be higher than they ever imagined.

Fred, for instance, is also Bob, a notorious drug dealer. Along with his superior officers, Fred sets up an elaborate scheme to catch Bob and tear down his operation.

Babel

Overly convoluted plot that led nowhere.

Armed with a Winchester rifle, two Morrocan boys set out to look after their family's herd of goats. In the silent echoes of the desert, they decide to test the rifle… but the bullet goes farther than they thought it would. In an instant, the lives of four separate groups of strangers on three different continents collide. Caught up in the rising tide of an accident that escalates beyond anyone's control are a vacationing American couple, a rebellious deaf Japanese teenager and her father, and a Mexican nanny who, without permission, takes two American children across the border. None of these strangers will ever meet; in spite of the sudden, unlikely connection between them, they will all remain isolated due to their own inability to communicate meaningfully with anyone around them.

You, Me & Dupree

Only thing watchable was Kate Hudson.

Carl and Molly Peterson are just starting their new life together --complete with a cute house, boring neighbors, stable jobs and the routines of newlywed existence. There's just one unfortunate hitch in their perfectly constructed new world. And his name is Dupree. Randy Dupree, Carl's oldest friend and perpetual bachelor, has found himself with nowhere to go after being fired. Carl yanks his jobless/homeless pal out of the bar he's living in and invites him to temporarily crash on the couch -- that's just what friends do. At first, Carl is quite pleased to have his good buddy as a permanent couch guest, while Molly bears the brunt of Dupree's immature antics. But, as Carl becomes buried in his grown-up job, he finds it harder and harder to juggle Dupree and his responsibilities as a husband. To make matters worse, Dupree uses his ample spare time to become a great companion for Molly. Even her dad and the neighbors are falling for his carefree wisdom and charm -- frustrating Carl to no end. Soon, everyone (but Carl) begins to root for Dupree to stick around. But as Dupree starts to become a fixture in the Peterson's home, three becomes not just a crowd -- but a full blown, hilarious catastrophe.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

I guess the humour was just outta context as it often wasn't funny. Sacha Baron Cohen aka Borat was a scene stealer though.

Ricky Bobby is a go-for-broke race car driver who, in races, either finishes first or doesn't finish at all. Unhappy with these results, Bobby's team owner brings over Jean Girard, a French Formula One driver, who quickly becomes Bobby's biggest rival.

Singapore v Thailand

I'd love to be there at the National Stadium tonight but I'll be at ALG instead. Anyway, wish the Lions all the best against the Thais. We'll say a little prayer for them tonight, even as they leave this afternoon from the Amara, where our church is located.

As Glenn Ong out it:
"We are SIngapore
We are SIngapore
We will stand to gether
Hear the lion ROAR!"

Go get 'em.

Singapore vs Malaysia

YES! Singapore beats Malaysia 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate stalemate after 210 minutes of football.

And we were there where all the action happened, barely 5m away from the Malaysian supporters. Banter came thick and fast, though it appeared to me that our neighbours were better organised with their chants.

Oh, the game, yes. Al things considered, Singapore just about deserved to go through for creating more clear-cut chances. This was more to do with Malaysia unable to defend their leftback and Ridhuan then Fazrul hept getting chances to put telling crosses in.

In the end it came down to penalties. After a scare when the Malaysian keeper got a hand to Jiayi's shot, Lionel Lewis atoned for his first half gaffe with a simple save to put Singapore into the final, where they will probably face Thailand.

American Beauty

An indictment of everything beautiful about America.

From its first gliding aerial shot of a generic suburban street, American Beauty moves with a mesmerizing confidence and acuity epitomized by Kevin Spacey's calm narration. Spacey is Lester Burnham, a harried Everyman whose midlife awakening is the spine of the story, and his very first lines hook us with their teasing fatalism--like Sunset Boulevard's Joe Gillis, Burnham tells us his story from beyond the grave.
It's an audacious start for a film that justifies that audacity. Weaving social satire, domestic tragedy, and whodunit into a single package, Alan Ball's first theatrical script dares to blur generic lines and keep us off balance, winking seamlessly from dark, scabrous comedy to deeply moving drama. The Burnham family joins the cinematic short list of great dysfunctional American families, as Lester is pitted against his manic, materialistic realtor wife, Carolyn (Annette Bening, making the most of a mostly unsympathetic role) and his sullen, contemptuous teenaged daughter, Jane (Thora Birch, utterly convincing in her edgy balance of self-absorption and wistful longing). Into their lives come two catalytic outsiders. A young cheerleader (Mena Suvari) jolts Lester into a sexual epiphany that blooms into a second adolescence. And an eerily calm young neighbor (Wes Bentley) transforms both Lester and Jane with his canny influence.

Credit another big-screen newcomer, English theatrical director Sam Mendes, with expertly juggling these potentially disjunctive elements into a superb ensemble piece that achieves a stylized pace without lapsing into transparent self-indulgence. Mendes has shrewdly insured his success with a solid crew of stage veterans, yet he's also made an inspired discovery in Bentley, whose Ricky Fitts becomes a fulcrum for both plot and theme. Cinematographer Conrad Hall's sumptuous visual design further elevates the film, infusing the beige interiors of the Burnhams' lives with vivid bursts of deep crimson, the color of roses--and of blood. --Sam Sutherland

Motorcycle Diaries

The true story of the making of Che Guevera.

In 1952, two young Argentines, Ernesto Guevara and Alberto Granado, set out on a road trip to discover the real Latin America. Ernesto is a 23-year-old medical student specializing in leprology, and Alberto, 29, is a biochemist. The tale follows their journey as they unveil the rich and complex human and social topography of the Latin American continent.

Cinderella Man

Looking for a movie to lift your spirits? This is it.

Based on the true story of fighter Jim Braddock, who in Depression-era New York enters the boxing ring out of desperation to feed his family. He becomes a common folk hero as he battles his way up the ranks, vaulting from broken-down ex-boxer to living legend with a string of amazing upsets to his credit. As word of the scrappy underdog spreads, entire families stay glued to their radios, cheering, praying and experiencing his victories as their own. Their devotion reaches fever pitch when Braddock faces heavyweight champ Max Baer. That night, Braddock's dignity, courage and determination gives hope to a nation and earns him the nickname of Cinderella Man.

GEMS

Well, things are getting off to a good start with GEMS, the amalGEM (ahem) of a Ladies' and Men's ALG. We are seeing strong attendance, where our sum is greater than our parts. We even have had a couple of newcomers. You can just feel the synergy running through the place. May GOd continue to bless us.

On the downside, I bought shaving blades and lost them. $20 gone. I am getting my laptop tomorrow though!

Blue Ribbon Against Child Abuse

Do pass it on if you're against child abuse.

My name is Sarah
I am but three,
My eyes are swollen
I cannot see

I must be stupid,
I must be bad,
What else could have made
My daddy so mad?

I wish I were better,
I wish I weren't ugly,
Then maybe my Mommy
Would still want to hug me

I can't speak at all,
I can't do a wrong
Or else I'm locked up
All the day long

When I awake
I'm all alone
The house is dark
My folks aren't home

When my Mommy does come
I'll try and be nice,
So maybe I'll get just
One whipping tonight

Don't make a sound!
I just heard a car
My daddy is back
From Charlie's Bar

I hear him curse
My name he calls
I press myself
Against the wall

I try and hide
From his evil eyes
I'm so afraid now
I'm starting to cry
He finds me weeping
He shouts ugly words,
He says it’s my fault
That he suffers at work

He slaps me and hits me
And yells at me more,
I finally get free
And I run for the door

He's already locked it
And I start to bawl,
He takes me and throws me
Against the hard wall

I fall to the floor
With my bones nearly broken,
And my daddy continues
With more bad words spoken

"I'm sorry!” I scream
But it’s now much too late
His face has been twisted
Into unimaginable hate

The hurt and the pain
Again and again
Oh please God, have mercy!
Oh please let it end!

And he finally stops
And heads for the door,
While I lay there motionless
Sprawled on the floor

My name is Sarah
And I am but three,
Tonight my daddy
Murdered me

Blood Diamond

An expose a-la-Hotel Rwanda on the corruptibility of the diamond trade. DiCaprio and Hounsou deserve the gongs for this one.

Both men are Afri...( read more )can, but their histories as different as any can be, until their fates become joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond that can transform their lives. While in prison for smuggling, Archer learns that Solomon--who was taken from his family and forced to work in the diamond fields--has found and hidden the extraordinary rough stone. With the help of Maddy Bowen, an American journalist whose idealism is tempered by a deepening connection with Archer, the two men embark on a trek through rebel territory, a journey that could save Solomon's family and give Archer the second chance he thought he would never have.
